Easter Egg

Easter eggs and a cute bunny

We’re running Film Term Friday one day early this week, to keep your feeds clear for the Bank Holiday. It’s the final entry in our three-part food-related runner, and it’s right on-trend for the time of year.

This week’s term is “Easter egg”. It means a little hidden object or reference in a film or tv show. The term probably originates with The Rocky Horror Picture Show, where the cast go on an Easter egg hunt but fail to find many of the eggs.

Famous examples are to be found in the films of directors and great friends Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas. For example, Elliott plays with Star Wars characters in “ET”, and there is a delegation of ET-shaped characters in the council chamber in “Star Wars – The Phantom Menace”.

Bonus trivia: We were going to go with “Honey wagon” as our term this week before we remembered it was the Easter holiday. We’ll leave you to find out the meaning of “Honey wagon” on your own. On balance, “Easter egg” is a much sweeter entry.
