🎬 After a long hiatus, and just when you thought it was safe to go back in the LinkedIn water, Film Term Friday is back.
We’re starting off the year with one of our all-time favourite pieces of equipment: the dolly. This filmmaker’s best friend isn’t a porcelain sidekick or a lucky charm. 🎥 It is, in fact, the unsung hero of smooth camera movements.
The dolly is a camera platform that sits on rails. It allows the camera to move smoothly through a scene, with a dream-like gliding motion. Without realising it, you’ll have seen it being used in almost every movie and tv programme you’ve ever seen. The person who pushes the dolly is called a dolly grip.
🕺 So next time you hear us talking about bringing our dolly to the set, don’t confuse it with a kiddo’s plaything. It’s the real MVP, making movie magic happen one perfectly tracked shot at a time!
